Seaport of Iquique

Iquique is a seaport with the code CLIQQ. It is located in Chile. The city became known for the naval battle that took place on 21 May 1879. The Chilean national hero – Arturo Prat – died in that battle, one of many during the War of the Pacific of 1879-1884. The port is the biggest customs-free commercial site in South America. This zone is called Zofri, full name Zona Franca Iquique, or the Free Zone of Iquique. It has an area of 2.4 km2, the port has warehouses, bank branches, even restaurants. The city itself is situated at the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Iquique is among the driest places in the world in which the total yearly rainfall doesn’t exceed 1 mm. The city has 252,516 residents. They excavate primarily copper. The city is divided into several districts. Many foreigners decided to settle here, mostly citizens from Croatia, Italy, Greece, China, Arabia, Perun or Bolivia.
